Awesome! Scorsese's best picture since Casino. Scorsese doing what Scorsese does best; telling a great ganster/cops story. Lots of twists. Great performances from some huge names (Alec Baldwin giving his best since Glengarry Glenross). Suspensful. And fun. Highly recommended.

Now I'm not the type of person to just hand out 4 star ratings to anything, but this was sensational. One of the best movies I've seen in the past 5 years or so. For me this is up there with some of Scorsese's best movies. As mitch pointed out, it's not like he had amateurs to direct. All performances were top notch and the story was excellent. I consider this a "must see" and is officially #1 on my 2007 viewings.

Totally solid. I have no problem if Scorsese finally wins an Oscar for this film. A greatly written and directed cops/robbers flick. Lots of tension, twists, inspired dialogue, graphic bloodshed, and top-notch acting. Though Wahlberg was good, he wasn't in the film that much, and I am puzzled as to why he got nominated. A better choice for a supporting nomination would've been Alec Baldwin - he just chews his scenes fabulously. I also would've opted to give DiCaprio a nomination for his work here, rather than what I thought was his weaker job in 'Blood Diamond'. And though Nicholson was his usual excellent self, it was pretty much like watching Nicholson. He is and will always be his own character (but what a character!). Anyways, small quibbles. Like stated above, Scorsese's best since 'Casino', in the genre that he truly masters. I rank it amongst his best, and it goes on my best of 2006 for sure.

Almost forgot - this film also had the very beautiful Vera Farmiga.....I knew I'd seen her before somewhere else, but couldn't put my finger on it. Thank you IMDB! - check my review of the underrated film 'Dummy'. ![]()

It was very good, but mmmm, not perfect in my books. It was like Goodfellas, but set in Boston with a Irish mob instead of Italian. *minor spoiler warning* Did like the intertwining yin-yang set of informants playing off each other, didn't like the ending though. Not that I was hoping for a cheesy Hollywood ending, but basically blowing EACH character away and then have the credits roll seemed a bit too "anti-tidy"... Solid movie, though... |
