Synopsis

In 1987, obese, illiterate, black 16-year-old Claireece "Precious" Jones lives in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem with her dysfunctional mother; she has been raped and impregnated twice by her father, Carl, and suffers long term physical, mental and sexual abuse from her unemployed mother, Mary. Ah, nothing like a movie about an impoverished, obese victim of incest to get the ol' happy juices flowing!

Actually, to be fair, this is not a depressing movie, despite being about a very depressing subject.

The performances, the feel of the film, and the realism are all outstanding. (heck, even Mariah Carey is excellent)

Highly recommended.

Excellent and powerful movie.

I did find it depressing. Very realistic in it's approach and what aomeone under these circumstance would most probably have to actually go through.

Maria Carey was actually excellent (as was Lenny Kravitz.....who knew?)

Mo Nique (who took the Oscar) was really REALLY deserving here.

Tough roles were handled to perfection. I'd give a nod to the direction as well.

My only complaint is that every time they mentioned "Precious", all I could think about was...
