If you're familiar with Bill Maher, the you know he's a skeptic of the highest order. If you didn't know that, well, he makes it very clear from the get-go. This doc takes some very easy aim at some fish-in-a-barrel types, sort of like in a lesser Michael Moore-meets-Borat style. That being said, it is quite entertaining, especially if you agree with Maher's stances on religion, as I do. Here, he is peddling doubt. It's not so much that he's looking for answers, but when confronted time and again with people whose faith goes beyond all logic (i.e. bible stories about Jonah living in a whale, Adam and Eve conversing with a talking snake, everyday people convinced that small common things like rain are 'miracles', etc...), his response is usually, "Oh, COME ON now!". It's fascinating stuff for sure, and Maher has done his research and is quick-witted enough for some barbed repartée when called for (with some precision editing, of course), but he won't be winning over any new fans. For the rest if us, it's a fun, insightful, jab at religion. Even if the targets are easy, Maher does seem earnest in just wanting to know WHY someone who would seem like an intelligent, thoughtful person would believe any of this hokum? View it! Discuss!! It's free on YouTube!

I am surprised I never posted this. It must be from the era of "The Laziness of Jeff Nerenberg" (aka, "I wash myself with a rag on a stick!"). I agree with Mitch's review wholeheartedly. Being a convinced atheist, I was a part of the choir being preached to with this movie. That made it fun and enjoyable for me. However, as an atheist, I hope that over time more and more will see the light - so to speak - and drop the illogical and delusional blind faith that so much of the world embraces. And that is my problem with the film. I don't think it would convince a single religious nut to put aside their faith for a minute and rely on their own senses for a moment. Nonetheless, good fun had by all us atheists, skeptics and agnostics. ![]() | ||

I was torn: on one hand, I admired it for its biting humour and satire. But on the other hand, I found Maher a bit obnoxious and condescending...I mean, it was kinda like shooting fish in a barrel - OF COURSE these people are loons and if you go LOOKING under rocks for the LOONIEST of loons then yes, it will make for good press. He seems to choose the most extreme factions of religious zealots who are just that, zealots and flings logic in the face where logic doesn't exist. Some of them react poorly but, then again, how are they SUPPOSED to act??! If they were to answer differently they would lose their jobs, (whatever's left of) their self-respect...etc. I just found it a bit entraping...but DAMN funny at the same time. |
