Wow, this one was kinda coocoo bananas.
Creepy and scary, but not in a horror movie way - more like a we're-brainwashing-your-kids-with-fundamentalist-christian-propaganda way. Focusing primarily on a small Missouri Evangelical Christian community that sees their kids as future soldiers for Christ and America, said kids are taught at early ages (most were between 6 and 12) a fanaticism for Jesus that totally dominates all aspects of their lives, and then are willingly shipped off to a bible camp in North Dakota for a few weeks of fundamental hysteria, complete with speaking-in-tongues, sermons, prayer, getting saved, being born-again, worshiping a card-board cut-out of George W. Bush, learning about how sin will destroy you, NOT separating church and state, and basically trying to out-fanatic the fanatics.
Though not a fan of organized religion myself, I do believe that people have the right to believe what they want, so long as you don't intrude on others or harm them. Freedom of choice, right?
Here, the kids aren't being given much of an alternative, and thanks to early brainwashing, they don't seem to want one. How creeped out would you be if a 9-year old girl came up to you and asked if you've made your decision for Christ? Or if she had a plastic toy fetus in her hand and tried to shamed you into becoming pro-life?
Anyways, though intriguing, the doc itself lost some steam for me around the mid-way point when I realized that this wasn't really heading anywhere positive (in my eyes) and that the message was pretty much established from the get-go. I'm sure there are communities like this one world-wide and not just with Evangelical Christians, but man, I'm staying away from Missouri.
