Grown Up Movie Star tells the story of disgraced NHL star Ray and his precocious daughters Ruby and Rose. 13 Year old Ruby is determined to grow up fast after her mother runs away to become a movie star, leaving Ruby with her hopelessly rural father. At loose ends for lack of guidance, Ruby is becoming increasingly curious about her own sexuality and, in a desperate plea for attention, putting herself in increasingly risky situations.

A friend of a friend of mine directed this indie Canadian flick, and it's currently playing in limited release (I actually saw it on a big movie-plex screen, but you'll be more likely to catch it at the repertoires). A bleak, despondent film, yet has moments of clarity, hope, and humour. Shot entirely in Newfoundland, mostly with and by locals, and it instantly brought to mind the similarly-themed New Zealand gem 'Once Were Warriors' (though not QUITE as brutal). Issues of domestic abuse, teen sexuality, homosexuality, and general dysfunctionalism placed within a small town mentality are present here, and so much more. The dialogue is honest and sharp but not cocky nor pandering, and there isn't a weak link amongst the cast, particularly Tatiana Maslany who is a 25 year old playing a 13 year old and you would never know it. Just a nice surprise of a film, and Canadian to boot. Check it out if you get a chance.

Sounds good! I will keep my eyes open for it!

Sounds a bit New Waterford Girl - esque (a distinct complement).
